VASEP Predicts Pangasius Exports at US$1.6B-US$1.8B This Yr
Domestic firms are expected to earn US$1.6 billion-US$1.8 billion from pangasius exports this year, according to Vietnam Association for Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP).
The figure is much higher than the previously targeted US$1 billion figure of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the paper said.
Strong appreciation of euro against U.S. dollars is attributed to the situation, the association said, adding that the European Union is now the largest importer of Vietnam pangasius fish.
Russia, meanwhile, has already reopened its market to Vietnamese pangasius fish since May this year, planning to import about 70,000 tons by the year end.
In the first six months this year, Vietnam was estimated to export 206,000 tons of pangasius fish worth a total US$473.9 million, a slight decrease against the same period of 2008. Of the figure, EU imported US$ 206 million and the U.S. US$45.97 million. (Vietnam Economic Times)
