Ms. Nichapa Yoswee, Managing Director of Reed Tradex Company, one of Thailand’s and Indochina’s leading exhibition and conference organizers said that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) forecasts that Vietnam’s economy will grow 6.5 percent this year on anticipation the government will not adopt additional fiscal stimulus measures and the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) will further pursue tight monetary policy.

The ADB’s forecast in the report titled “Asian Development Outlook 2009 Update” is based on the assumption that the SBV will eliminate the forex shortage by greater flexibility of its reference rate and increased forex sales. However, analysts of the ADB said in the report that Vietnam’s inflation is likely to rise 8.3 percent this year from 5.2 percent in 2009, backed by rapid growth of money supply this year and possible increases in world commodity prices. In late November last year, the National Assembly, the country’s highest legislative body, also approved the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth target of 6.5 percent for 2010.

Vietnam is still the destination where foreign investors are interested in, owing to the government’s undisturbed administrative policies, which are the key factors encouraging further economic developments as planned. The growth rate and expansion of industrial parks in Hanoi have reflected that Vietnam’s industrial sector is the key driver for the national economy. Specifically, Vietnam’s industry is clearly strong in its road map plans.

It is widely open to international manufacturing technologies for exports, as well as has continuous competitiveness in heavy industries e.g. automotive, information technology, textiles, electronics, steel and iron, ship building and construction sectors. Vietnam is mainly based on exportations with the average ratio per GDP higher than 70 per cent. Therefore, such depreciation helps decrease production costs, and benefits entrepreneurs to maintain their export quality and pricing standards.

Revenues from exports and rising demands of the locals for products with higher quality have been the causes of the rapid materialization of the industrial and export processing zones. The real factors that have made it all happen for Vietnamese manufacturing is the transfer of technologies and knowledge. A major concern of the Vietnamese government is trade deficit; in other words, the country needs to up their industrial production for export while relying more on its supporting industries. The government has started tackling the problem by increasing import tariff on automobile parts, and encouraging manufacturers to produce components and parts locally. Although electronics appliances have been part of the country’s export strengths, it is imperative that they continue improving their technological capabilities.
