SaiGon MeKong Aims for Sustainable Development

Saigon-Mekong Fishery Ltd. Co.in the southern province of Tra Vinh is a big enterprise which specialises in the fields of aquatic breeding, processing and consumption. With a total registered capital of VND100 billion, the company has more than 800 laboures and boasts a system of advanced technology. It has three production lines, including two fillet tra fish and one for other kinds of seafood with a total combined capacity of 10,000 tonnes of products annually.
 
The firm also has two aquatic breeding areas which cover a total area of more than 20 ha and have a combined annual capacity of 7,000 tonnes. The company’s products are exported to many countries, even demanding ones, in the world thanks to their good quality. To sharpen the products’ competitiveness in the market, SaiGon-MeKong plans to build a stable material growing area via a off-take contract signed with farmers and tra fish investors. It also boosts production and consumption activities; diversifies products, aiming for the sustainable growth.
 
Last year, the firm faced many big challenges due to bad impacts of the global economic slowdown. Difficulties of a newly-built enterprises and slow sales of product as well as price hike of input materials affected the company’s production and business activities. In this situation, the managing board of SaiGon-MeKong timely worked out suitable policies by seeking material sources to maintain production and business and ensure jobs for workers. To reduce material costs, the company has focused on checking production process to remove unnecessary steps. With the goal “Quality and prestige are the foundation for Saigon-Mekong’s development”, the firm considers food hygience and safety as its top priority. Its products meet all requirements of the most demanding markets with the EU’s Code EU 491, the US’s HACCP and ISO 9001-2000. The company has been recognised no dumping, thus subject to preliminary zero duty, and the final verdict is expected to be made in Mar 2010.
 
The firm is now boosting the production of key export items, market expansion while maintaining traditional markets. Thanks to great effort from the local People’s Committee and agencies, the company has overcome bad impacts by the global economic downturn. Last year, it posted revenues of more than VND184 billion and total output of 4,474 tonnes, up 75 per cent against last year. In the year, it obtained export revenues of US$8.85 million, 64 per cent on-year.
 
In the coming time, to raise the operations effectiveness and gain sustainable development, SaiGon-MeKong will pay attention to making high-quality products to meet the market’s increasing demand. It will also boost export activities, while still concentrating on the domestic market. It has also continued carrying out the self-contained process from receiving input materials to production, processing and consumption. Therefore, it can supervise the product quality carefully to ensure its prestige and seek new partners. Director of the company Mai Dang Hoa said in the next few years, his firm will still keep its customer development strategy, expand distribution network and gradually bring its trademark to a new height.
