Vietnamese firms are estimated to have exported 425,322 tons of rice worth $159.34 million since early Aug, raising the Jan-Aug figure to nearly 4.5 million tons valued at $1.89 billion, the Vietnam Food Association said Aug 25.

The export volume is expected to reach a record high at 6.5 million tons by the end-2010, up 500,000 tons on-year, thanks to rising demand on the world market, said the association.

Analysts predicted that the global growing demand will drive up rice prices by between 6% and 7% in the remaining months of the year.

Rice prices have been rising in three weeks in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam as local farmers are completing harvest of the summer-autumn rice.

Unhusked rice is selling for VND6.4 million and VND6.9 million a ton, up VND1million a ton from early Aug.

Local farmers have harvested 1.4 million hectares, out of a total cultivated 1.6 million hectares of summer-autumn rice, with an average productivity of 4.94 tons per hectare. (New Hanoi)
