Public Transport Development Strategy Approved
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has passed a strategy to develop public transport from now until 2020 in a bid to reduce traffic congestion, accidents and environmental pollution nationwide.
Under the strategy, bus networks in the two biggest cities of Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh will be developed, linking city centers with suburban districts.
In addition, there will be new express bus services, new urban railways and metro lines to meet transport demand of people.
The strategy also encourages more investment in eco-friendly buses and those accessible to the disabled.
The strategy targets to raise the public’s awareness of the benefits of using public transport, such as monthly passes at preferential prices for students and commuters and free services for the elderly.
They are also being asked to conduct information campaigns to raise the sense of responsibility and professional behavior amongst bus drivers and conductors.
