Improving Value of Karst Plateau Geo-Park
The issues of maintaining and improving the value of Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geo-park in Ha Giang province and making it a model park for the development of karst plateau geo-park system in Asia were discussed at the recent conference on maintaining and promoting values of geo-parks.
Mr Guy Martini, a member of Global Geopark Network (GGN), highly appreciates endeavours made by Ha Giang province in building and developing its geopark. In 2011, the Management Board of Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark collaborated with experts of the GGN to organize four surveys in four mountainous districts to complete the report, evaluate the site, and investigate local socio-economic conditions, potential and strengths. Experts put forward nine recommendations, three of which are urgent and six of which, for development purposes.
Mr Guy Martini emphasized in his report and proposed that the provincial People’s Committee, the Management Board, relevant departments and local authorities improve awareness of local people, promote values of geo-parks; accelerate researches on geological heritages and terminate unorganized exploitation activities; prevent changes to traditional architecture of mountainous villages; develop regulations on management of heritages; lift administrative barriers to tourists and turn local traditional products into tourism products.
The Management Board of Dong Van Karst Plateau Geo-park is committed to cooperating with experts to provide consultancy to Ha Giang Provincial People’s Committee on implementing and overcoming difficulties for further development of the geo-park. Particularly, the Management Board will call for organizations, individuals, the global community, scientists and media to collaborate in maintaining and promoting values of Dong Van Karst Plateau Geo-park.
