As of late 2012, 10 percent of Vietnamese Tra fish (pangasius) exports were awarded Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certificates, promising higher competitiveness of the product in key markets in the future.

The outcome is expected to open up new market for Viet Nam’s Tra fish products.

So far, 13 local enterprises received the certificate from ASC whose standards also deal with environmental protection and social responsibility.

The acceptance of ASC standards benefits fish breeders and exporters to enable them to expand business in a sustainable manner and guarantee their income and job creation.

The fishery sector targets to raise the rate of recipients of ASC certificates for tra fish exports to 50 percent of by 2015, according to Mr Nguyen Huu Dung, Vice President of the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers.
