Vung Tau’s People's Committee said that the suggestion to recognise Vung Tau as Grade One Municipality of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has been approved by the Evaluation Council of the Ministry of Construction.
On 30 March, 2013, the Ministry of Construction organised a council evaluating the recognition of Vung Tau as a grade one municipality. After referring to current regulations, namely Decree 42 and Circular 34 on standards and criteria of grade 1 urban, the council agreed on the recognition of urban Vung Tau as a grade one municipality with an average score of 89.86 (in accordance with the standard of 70 points).
The evaluation of the Council shows that currently Vung Tau has 39 out of 49 criteria meeting and exceeding the standard; 9 out of 49 targets reaching the minimum level; only 1 out of 49 criteria is not reached. Specifically, the indicators of population density (10,161 persons per square kilometre), income per capita (US$6,000 per person), poverty rate (5.3 percent), floor area of urban housing (19,94 square metres of floor per person), fresh water (150 litres per person a day), health, education, and urban trees are all reached. Another indicator that Vung Tau has not reached is that the city has no funeral home. Currently, the city is working on a project to build funeral home with an area of 19,907 square metres which will be put into use in 2014.
Assuming that Vung Tau has the centre of economy, culture, science and technology, education and training, tourism services, transport, domestic and international exchange, etc. as well as one of the five poles of development of the Ho Chi Minh City surrounding area, the Council shared that it’s necessary to upgrade Vung Tau into grade 1 urban.
However, to make Vung Tau a sustainable urban area, the council proposes solutions and development direction for Vung Tau in the near future to find ways to cope with climate change, gradually develop technical infrastructure, soon apply waste treatment technology, complete water supply and drainage system, pay attention to construction management, and focus on ocean economic development.
Currently, the city of Vung Tau has become the national urban centre of oil and gas, tourism, ports and one of the leading cities in the country in terms of GDP.
