The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) on May 19 hosted a meeting with foreign businesses with the participation of Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Finance; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.
After China’s illegal deployment of its oil rig Haiyang Shiyou 981 in the Vietnamese waters that goes against the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Vietnamese people at home and abroad expressed their patriotism and opposition to the wrongdoings of China. According to VCCI, exploiting the situation, on May 13-14 2014, some extremists in localities such as Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Ha Tinh conducted very destructive and highly illegal actions. Such regrettable actions constitute serious violations of the law of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, jeopardising the law and order, causing economic damage, and severely undermining foreign investment and the business climate of Vietnam overall.
Shortly after the incident, the Vietnamese Government has taken synchronous actions to contain the illegal actions and is collaborating with the foreign enterprises in Vietnam to address the damage and resume production. Those who cause the incidents will be handled strictly in accordance with the Vietnamese law.
To date, the situation in the provinces where the incidents occurred has been stabilised and under absolute control. The safety of life and properties of foreigners are guaranteed. The Vietnamese Government is working with all the affected enterprises and most have been able to resume their normal production and business activities. The Vietnamese Government will also continue to work with those more severely damaged.
The Vietnamese Government is determined to take all measures necessary under the Vietnamese law as well as under its international commitments to ensure absolute security and safety of life and properties as well as the legitimate rights and interest of foreign institutions, enterprises and individuals in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese Government will absolutely not permit any act of vandalism against foreign enterprises and staff, and will strictly sanction those who cause such incidents, and ensure that such regrettable incidents will not reoccur.
The Vietnamese Government urges Governments of other countries to encourage their businesses, experts and workers to stay assured, continue their business and investment in Vietnam, and resume normal business, production and investment activities in Vietnam.
VCCI ensures foreign business associations and enterprises that it will take all possible steps to assist them and to renew confidence in Vietnam as a safe and promising investment destination.
