In the more than 40 years since Vietnam and Austria established diplomatic relations, the bilateral cooperation has kept developing in all fields such as politics, diplomacy, economy, trade, investment, education and health. And, to further strengthen two-way economic and commercial relations, the Ho Chi Minh City Branch of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI-HCM) recently collaborated with the Austrian Trade Commission in Ho Chi Minh City to organise Vietnam - Austria Trade Forum and Exchange

The forum attracted 12 Austrian companies engaged in irrigation, waste treatment, paper manufacturing, functional food production, cosmetics production, water purification, industrial chain, finance, veneer timber, plastic bottles, LED lights, traffic lights and furniture. Nearly 100 Vietnamese companies also attended the event to seek partners and long-term business cooperation ties.

Stephan Spazier, Commercial Attaché of the Austrian Embassy in Vietnam, said there is tremendous potential and opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to boost exports to Austria. He added that Austria has a high demand for importing garments, wood products, foods, spices, and electronic components which are also Vietnam’s key exports. This opens up a great number of opportunities for businesses from two countries to strengthen bilateral trade cooperation and raise their export earnings. In addition, with a young population, huge consumption demand, stable economic growth, synchronous infrastructure systems and an open investment environment, Vietnam is drawing much attention from Austrian businesses which expect to expand opportunities of business investment and cooperation in Vietnam. For its part, as a world-leading logistics service centre where goods are easily transported across Europe, Austria is willing to serve as a gateway for Vietnamese goods to penetrate the European market. Specially, quick business establishment registration procedures and low corporate income tax are favourable conditions for Vietnamese companies to do business here. Stephan Spazier stressed, “We are always welcoming and willing to support Vietnamese businesses to establish their business networks in Austria."

VCCI-HCM Deputy Director Nguyen The Hung said the bilateral trade ties have significantly expanded in recent years, but the outcomes are still incommensurate with the potential of bilateral economic cooperation. Austria is a big market in Europe, with a steadily growing economy. As the Austrian Government is carrying out Asia-looking policies, this forum is a good opportunity for businesses to promote trade exchanges, thus helping boost bilateral trade turnover in the coming time.

He said VCCI - HCM is committed to creating favourable conditions for Austrian businesses to invest and expand business cooperation in HCM City and neighbouring areas. In addition, VCCI - HCM will also actively cooperate with the Embassy of the Republic of Austria in Vietnam, the Austrian Trade Commission in HCM City and other bodies to organise trade and investment promotion activities to create opportunities for the business communities of both sides to strengthen cooperation to lift the bilateral economic - commercial ties to a new high in the coming time.

At the forum, Solar Serve Private Enterprise handed the Global Energy Award 2014 to the Bio energy Kitchen Project for remote rural areas. The Global Energy Award was created in 1999 by a member of the Global Energy Fund (Austria) with the aim of raising everyone’s awareness of environmental issues and evidencing active human roles and contributions in resolving existing environmental issues. To date, 115 countries have registered to join the Award with more than 1,000 projects and initiatives submitted a year.

Apart from the Bio energy Kitchen Project for remote rural areas, Vietnam previously had many projects win the Global Energy Awards like the biogas project for livestock husbandry performed by the Department of Animal Husbandry under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; the ‘four-chamber continuous ceramic kiln using rice husk gasification technology" project carried out by the Energy Conservation Research and Development Centre (ENERTEAM); and the wind - solar energy project for Spratly Islands of Vietnam carried out by Solar Bach Khoa Company (Solar BK).
