Binh Dinh province – on the eastern tip of Vietnam's East - West Axis - has a 134-km coast with a lot of islands, bays, lagoons and big seaports. With many deepwater seaports, the province is rich in potential and advantages for seaport economic development.
Currently, the seaport system of Binh Dinh province comprises Quy Nhon International Port – one of 10 major seaports of Vietnam with an annual cargo throughput of 8 million tonnes; Quy Nhon Newport – adjacent to Quy Nhon Port, with a yearly cargo throughput of 1 million tonnes, which is expected to reach 3 million tonnes in 2016; Thi Nai Port, also adjacent to Quy Nhon Port, with a yearly cargo throughput of 0.8 million tonnes; and blueprint Nhon Hoi Port in Nhon Hoi Economic Zone with an annual capacity of 12 million tonnes. Besides, Binh Dinh province has many ports under construction like Dong Da Port with an annual capacity of 1.4 million tonnes, De Gi Port (Phu Cat district) and Tam Quan Port (Hoai Nhon district). Seaports in Binh Dinh, mainly lying closely in Quy Nhon City, are 10 km from National Highway 1A, 189 nautical miles from Da Nang Port, 90 nautical miles from Nha Trang Port, 310 nautical miles from Vung Tau Port, and 486 nautical miles from Haiphong Port.
Tapping the potential and advantages of Quy Nhon Port is one of groundbreaking motivations of Binh Dinh province at the present time as well as in the future. Capable of handling 8 million tonnes a year now, Quy Nhon Port is a leading general port of the region and the nation as a whole. Nestled in Quy Nhon Bay, shielded and sheltered by Phuong Mai Peninsula and neared international shipping routes, the port is an ideal destination for ships travelling among key ports in Asia. In 2008, the Prime Minister approved the Central Vietnam Economic Zone where Quy Nhon City of Binh Dinh Province was identified as the centre of southern economic growth, the hub of transport routes and seaports of the Central Coast and the Central Highlands. In addition, according to the Vietnam Seaport System Development Master Plan to 2020, with a vision to 2030, Quy Nhon Port will be a national general port at the service of the Central Coast, the Central Highlands of Vietnam, southern provinces of Laos and northeast provinces of Cambodia.
The government of Binh Dinh province said seaports are an important, indispensible link; thus, any shortage or weakness of seaports and port logistics services will considerably hinder the provision of logistics services. To effectively draw on seaport economic potential, the investment for existing seaport upgrading is essential. Quy Nhon Port will be invested to raise its annual cargo throughput to 15 million tonnes in 2020 and 20 million tonnes after that. This development investment, tied to the construction planning of Nhon Hoi, Thi Nai, Tan Cang (Newport) and Dong Da ports will form a large-scale, effective port cluster which will serve transporting activities of the Mekong sub-region and the Asia - Pacific region. The expansion of Quy Nhon Port will also create development momentums not only for Binh Dinh province but also for the Central Coast, the Central Highlands, southern Laos and northeast Cambodia.
Besides, Binh Dinh is calling investors to build Nhon Hoi Port to serve the Nhon Hoi Economic Zone, especially Nhon Hoi petrochemical and oil refining complex. The province will also upgrade major roads linking to local ports to speed up transporting activities.
Last but not least, Binh Dinh province has currently become a vital bridge of trade between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, between Europe and the Middle East with China, Japan and countries in the East Sea.
