10:10:20 PM | 5/5/2015

The Global Summit of Women is the first and largest forum empowering the role and status of women worldwide. The 2015 Global Summit of Women takes place in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 14-16.
Under the guidance of Vice President of Vietnam Nguyen Thi Doan, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) assigned the Vietnam Women Entrepreneurs Council (VWEC) to organise a business delegation to accompany the Vice President to attend the summit. The programme is scheduled to take place from May 11 - 19, 2015.

Themed “Creative women - Creative economies” the summit confirms the stronger and more aggressive roles of women. Women are really seeking to become the key holder to solve difficulties and challenges that the world faces.

Since the first meeting in 1990, this is the 25th Global Summit of Women. The summit is the first and largest forum empowering the role and status of women worldwide. Vietnam attaches special importance to this forum and always sends a high-ranking official delegation to this forum.

Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan said "After each meeting, we have gained more valuable experience and more confidence in proving prominent positions of women when they are involved in social and economic affairs and solve international issues. We also have many friends and build fine ties in business and leadership, seek effective partners in State management as well as business field. This year’s Vietnam delegation is constituted by typical women at central and local levels as well as brilliant businesswomen.”

In Vietnam, women’s roles in economy are increasingly important. A third of big Vietnamese companies are led by women. In 2013, Vietnam had the first woman to be named on the Forbes 50, the list of 50 most powerful businesswomen in Asia. Mai Kieu Lien, President and CEO of Vinamilk, was on the list. Women are always at the forefront of poverty alleviation, community activities, mediation works, family building and offspring training.

Vietnamese women’s participation in policymaking is enhanced in both quantity and quality. Particularly, they are active, substantive and effective in building laws and policies on socioeconomic development.
However, it is admitted that women’s participation in the economy and in the society remains difficult and challenging, which comes from mechanism barriers, legal framework, awareness and prejudice against women in the family and in the society.

With the theme of "Creative women - Creative economies", this meeting will discuss effective measures and experience for women to participate actively in economic development, create the dynamic spirit and develop the economy and society.

The 2014 Global Summit of Women took place in France from June 4-7, 2014. The summit was also incorporated with many events like “CEO Forum: Redefining the Marketplace” and “Women Entrepreneurs Forum: Reinventing an Enterprise" as well as in-depth discussions like “Women Inventors and Inventions: Bringing an Idea to the Marketplace”, “Working Effectively across Generations”, “Media and Imaging Women as Leaders”, “Linking Diversity, Wellness, and Sustainability”, “ Women on Boards Roundtable: Global Best Practices.” The summit did not address gender equality issues in general but focused on discussing the goal of expanding economic opportunities for women in the world and thus, promoting the role and advancement of women in all aspects of social life.
