Vietnam Business Forum conducts an interview with Mr Duangdej Yuaikwarmdee, Deputy Managing Director and General Manager Vietnam of Reed Tradex Co., Ltd, one of the leading exhibition organisers in ASEAN. Nam Pham reports.
Can you tell us about Reed Tradex’s directions and visions for Vietnam over the next five years?
The international integration visions of Vietnam’s leadership are on track and Vietnam is becoming one of the most important partners in the region. The good signal is that foreign direct investment has been steadily increasing in recent years.

We see Vietnam with the potential of the three advantage products. Firstly, exports of motorcycle and automobile spare parts are getting better and ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) will help Vietnam further access to the markets of Japan and the U.S. More Japanese investors will arrive in Vietnam to invest in this industry, creating fierce competition for Thailand and the Philippines.

Secondly, Vietnam is the leading country in ASEAN in manufacturing electronics spare parts because many leading global corporations such as Intel, Samsung, Canon, Nokia and others have invested in Vietnam to take advantage of low labour cost.

Thirdly, Vietnam’s garment and textile industry is keeping a big competitive advantage when having a strong foothold in the largest markets of EU and the U.S. In addition, Thailand’s garment industry is facing the serious problems with investment procedures and high labour cost.

Reed Tradex wishes to contribute to Vietnam’s growth and will focus on the three key industries over the next five years.

How do you think about Vietnam’s supporting industry during the implementation of AEC, TPP and other free trade agreements (FTAs)?
When AEC took effect, Vietnam has more advantages compared with other ASEAN countries, and more foreign direct invested projects are coming in Vietnam. Vietnam is becoming a big rival of Malaysia and China, with the key products such as garment and textile, spare parts for motorcycle and automobile production, and many supporting industries.

Vietnam is an emerging market in ASEAN and Thailand’s investors are considering Vietnam as the right place to invest. More Thai companies are looking for Vietnamese manufacturers to cooperate with because many manufacturing industries of Thailand are facing high production costs.

Can you brief results of Vietnam Manufacturing Expo 2015 (VME) and highlights of VME 2016?
Reed Tradex organized VME 2015 in September in Hanoi with the participation of more than 9,000 visitors. The modest number of visitors was resulted in the fact that heavy rains in the raining season badly affected. However, almost all visitors, especially from Japan, had good responses in terms of information access, technologies, and industrial knowledge.

At Vietnam Manufacturing Expo 2016 organized in April, in addition to manufacturing machinery and technologies for the supporting industries by around 240 brands from more than 20 countries, a year-on-year increase of 20 per cent, industrial part-making factory owners, engineers, production managers, and industrialists will use this event as a “Community Platform” to source new solutions, new parts, new suppliers, new partners, and new knowledge to keep up or lead the change that the promising future of AEC will bring. We also expect a sharp rise of visitors to this year’s event to 12,000 because many manufacturers have registered in advance for their groups to join with bigger numbers of industrialists and staff members.

VME 2016 will highlight the latest technologies, robots, automation systems, mold and plastics machines, metal working, and tool machines to meet Vietnam’s industrial demand in the future. Many business matching events for companies and competitions for industrialists and workers will also be organized to exchange business opportunities and enhance professional skills.

What are your forecasts of the key technologies which can affect and promote the development of Vietnam’s manufacturing industry in the future?
If Vietnamese mould makers and plastics manufacturers are developed so that they are stronger with better technologies, skills, knowledge, and business network, they will possess more competitiveness, earn more opportunities from the foreign investors, and help the country reduce trade deficit derived from the import of industrial parts. Recognizing the emerging opportunities in the mould making and plastics manufacturing sectors, VME 2016” has been positioned to help drive the growth of the supporting industries as a leading exhibition on machine tools for mould and die making and injection technologies for plastics manufacturing.

Higher precision, fast production lines, and automation will have larger impacts to Vietnam’s manufacturing industry in the future. Vietnam also needs to focus on energy saving and environmentally friendly technologies in order to meet the big markets of EU and the U.S which have high standards on techniques, environment, and energy saving.
Vietnam is ranking in the ASEAN top-three list in using digital devices, therefore, Reed Tradex will utilize this trend to design a digital network for visitors and exhibitors to easily connect together before and after exhibitions.

How does Reed Tradex engage to support the industrialists and manufacturers in Vietnam to catch up with new business opportunities from the pressure of international integration?
Reed Tradex will try the best to find and call for companies with modern, higher technologies from Thailand to come to the Vietnamese market to help Vietnamese manufacturers access to suitable technologies in for their long-term investment strategies. We will support local enterprises to access to international knowledge by joining conferences and workshops with leading and experienced experts, and encourage their industrialists and staffs to participate in such events and professional competitions.

One of the most important tasks we consider is to set up a business networking for Vietnamese companies which will effectively help call for more foreign investment in Vietnam and introduce Vietnamese products to foreign markets.
