VINAFCO - A Leading Freight Forwarder in Vietnam

In developed countries, professional logistics services have been developed for a long time. In Vietnam, the logistics concept has only been considered in its broad and comprehensive meaning since the establishment of the Vietnam Freight Forwarding Corporation (VINAFCO). In Northern Vietnam, VINAFCO is not only a volunteer but also the leading enterprise in this industry.

The corporation was set up in 1987 under the management of the Ministry of Transport, when the Vietnamese economy was experiencing a transitional period. It was converted into a joint stock enterprise in 2001. So far, VINAFCO has seen great developmental steps with various products. It has member enterprises providing transportation services.

In November 1996, VINAFCO and the Hanel Company, the Sumitomo Corporation and the Suzio Corporation of Japan set up the Dragon Logistics Company. In December 2000, it set up its fleet of container carriers, the International Trade and Transportation Centre (ITC) and VINAFCO Saigon, which have provided services for many domestic and foreign companies. In particular, the development of its transportation agency and material manufacturing factory, set up in 1990, into the VINAFCO Logistics Company in July 2003, affirmed that logistics is a spearhead business of VINAFCO. VINAFCO Logistics is the first enterprise to be granted with a licence by the Ministry of Transport to provide transportation services in Laos, Cambodia and China. The company has various transit vehicles, including container vehicles, light trucks and trucks for frozen items. It has a network of representative offices in Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh, Haiphong, Vientiane (Laos) and a network of subcontracts in neighbouring countries. VINAFCO Logistics is considered the leading enterprise in providing transportation services in Laos. It is a pioneer in providing transportation along the east-west corridor via Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar and the north-south corridor via China, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Since 1998, VINAFCO Logistics has set up two more logistics centres at 78 Bac Dang, Hanoi, and the Tien Son Industrial Park, Bac Ninh province, with 40,000 square metres of warehouses and modern loading and unloading equipment, including 40-tonne and 15-tonne cranes and forklifts. With the two centres, VINAFCO Logistics is the leading enterprise in Northern Vietnam to have logistics centres meeting all requirements of customers for import, export activities and bonded warehouse services. The company has become a reliable logistics service provider of many foreign companies, in particular Japanese corporations such as Honda, Yamaha, Toyota, Suzuki, Ajinomoto and other corporations of the US and European countries, such as Exxon Mobil, ICI, Formost, Nestle, as well as companies from Taiwan, China, Singapore, and Laos.

To improve the quality of logistics services, VINAFCO Logistics has paid great attention to capacity building, co-operation promotion with domestic and foreign partners. The company now has qualified staff members who are capable of managing warehouses, organising transportation and import and export activities for customers.

Its excellent logistics services have helped the company build up its image among customers. As a result, its annual growth rate has been put at between five and 20 per cent. In the coming years, VINAFCO will continue to invest in logistics centres with modern equipment and facilities to meet the increasing requirement of its customers in Hanoi, Haiphong, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. Also, it will set up logistics centres in Central Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City and develop human resources for a solid development of the VINAFCO trademark as one of the most prestigious in Vietnam and the region.
