On October 20, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in cooperation with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Vietnam Electronic Industries Association (VEIA) hosted a ceremony to launch the Vietnam Electronics Business Coalition to promote socially responsible labour practices.

Addressing the ceremony, VCCI President Vu Tien Loc said: Exercising standards and laws on social responsibility in general and labour relations in particular is a very important requirement. If investing in employees and fulfilling socially responsible labour practices, enterprises can recruit, train and promote dynamism, creativity and responsibility of employees.

Dr Changhee Lee, ILO Country Director for Vietnam, said, multinational enterprises (MNEs) have a great influence wherever they invest and wherever they operate. Therefore, how they manage their human resources or how they manage their labour relations in the workplace has a big impact not only on their own workplaces but also on global supply chains.

By making a tripartite commitment to improving labour practices in multinational enterprises and domestic enterprises, tripartite partners in Vietnam have taken a very important step to ensure that their workplaces have better working conditions and productivity for workers and managers, he added.

The transnational production network expansion by multinational electronics corporations has exerted a positive impact on developing economies such as Vietnam by using capital, technology and labour more effectively although there are existing matters concerning labour and employment.

The growing competitiveness facing Vietnamese companies taking part in global supply chains has led some to take cost-cutting measures that may affect working conditions and may negatively spoil their credibility and capacity in the long term.

Therefore, exercising socially responsible labour practices in the electronics industry will not only create momentum for Vietnam's electronics industry to increase its competitive advantages in the market but also provide Vietnamese workers with more employment opportunities and better working conditions where their rights and interests are fulfilled.
