Vietnam Firm to Export 21,000 Bikes to Europe
Dragon Bicycle Vietnam in the Nhon Trach Industrial Zone in the southern province of Dong Nai will export a US$2 million batch made of 21,000 bicycles to Europe.
The batch includes many kinds of sports, mountain and city bikes, which are produced on European importers’ designs with iron or aluminum bodies.
Dragon Bicycle Vietnam and other domestic producers manufacture 70 per cent of the components.
The volume of bikes exported from Vietnam this year is expected to decrease due to Canada’s anti-dumping lawsuit said Truong Chi Trung, the company’s representative.
“Although the EU doesn’t make the final decision, many European customers hesitate to sign contracts with Vietnamese bicycle exporters,” he added.
Vietnam's exported bicycle volume and its market share in the EU market have rapidly increased in recent years, from 267,000 units and 1.6 per cent in 1999 to 307,000 and 1.8 per cent in 2000, 586,000 and 3.7 per cent in 2001, 767,000 and 5 per cent in 2002, and 1.31 million and 8.2 per cent in 2003. Shipments in 2004 are estimated at 1.5 million units, according to statistics provided by the European Commission.
