The Nam Con Son gas project offshore southern Ba Ria Vung Tau province has exploited 5 billion cubic meters of gas, said BP Vietnam, the project’s operator on May 30.
Since early March 2005, the project has pumped 1 billion cubic meters, the company added.
On March 23, Nam Con Son successfully raised its output by 30 per cent over its designed capacity in response to Electricity of Vietnam (EVN)'s request for higher gas supply to fuel the Phu My Power Complex in an effort to ease power shortages in the northern region.
Thanks to the increase in the project’s output, the country has saved around US$100 million instead of importing oil.

The US$1.3-billion project is the biggest foreign-invested project in Vietnam with investors being the Vietnam Oil and Gas Corporation (PetroVietnam), the UK's BP Group, India's Oil and Natural Gas Company (ONGC Videsh) and the US's ConocoPhillips.
This year the project targets to produce 3.2 billion cubic meters, up 30 per cent compared with 2004.
