On December 9, 2021, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD-VCCI) successfully organized the Vietnam Business Forum for Sustainable Development (VCSF 2021) with the theme “Sustainable businesses aiming for a better sustainable decade” and the Announcing Ceremony for Sustainable Companies in Vietnam (CSI 2021).
The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, Chairman of the National Council on Sustainable Development and Competitiveness Enhancement, and more than 150 delegates. The event was also virtually delivered to nearly 1,000 domestic and international delegates.
Speaking at the event, VCCI President Pham Tan Cong said that 2021 is the opening year of the new decade 2021-2030 and the first year to implement the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress toward the goal of turning our country into a developed country with high middle income. Over the past five years, Vietnam has made great achievements in the implementation of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. However, due to the effects of climate change and the pandemic, Vietnam will have to double its efforts in the next 10 years to maintain the achieved results and fulfill the set targets by 2030. Enterprises that have adopted the sustainable development orientation for their development strategy and exercised a sustainable business and governance model have demonstrated their ability to withstand, adapt and compete well in the face of global challenges.
Addressing VCSF 2021, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam highly appreciated the efforts of VCCI – VBCSD, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, and related parties that have been continuously maintaining activities to promote dialogue on sustainable development, popularize the application of the CSI Index to contribute to building a sustainable business community in Vietnam. These are practical and effective activities for the sake of the country's sustainable development.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam also pointed out the core points that help Vietnam and the business community to sustainably develop in the context of living with the pandemic. Accordingly, businesses must determine to pursue sustainable development and build a culture of sustainable development as a solution for recovery and development in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Enterprises with a strong and persistent commitment to persistently pursuing the sustainable development strategy for many years have created their own "antibodies" to the pandemic and managed to maintain stable operations and business growth, and effectively supported the Government in realizing the dual goals of preventing the pandemic and developing the economy.
In the strategy of developing a sustainable business community in Vietnam, on behalf of the Organizing Committee, General Secretary of VCCI, Executive Vice Chairman of VBCSD Nguyen Quang Vinh officially launched the Program on Benchmarking and Announcing Sustainable Companies in Vietnam in 2022 (CSI 2022) and affirmed that VCCI-VBCSD and relevant agencies, domestic and foreign partners would continue to actively coordinate to improve the CSI Index in the coming time.
According to the results of the 6th edition of CSI 2021, the percentage of Vietnamese and foreign enterprises achieving the title of top 10 sustainable development are 55% and 45% respectively; In the top 100, this percentage is 63% and 27% respectively. This shows Vietnamese businesses are becoming more ready and more adaptive to pursue sustainability.
