The first Malaysia education exhibition held in late 2004 and then others in 11 provinces and cities such as Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Nam Dinh, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh are clear evidences that Malaysia education is urgently penetrating into Vietnam. Another exhibition and seminar on the same subject was organised on August 27-28 in Hanoi with the aim of introducing incentives and opportunities when pursuing higher education programmes at Malaysiarsquo;s universities to Vietnamese students as well as their parents.

The advantages

According to Mr Azhar Hold Salleh, Director of Malaysian Education Promotion Centre, the number of foreign students studying in Malaysia increased sharply in recent years. Some 43,000 foreign students from 157 countries are following university and higher education in Malaysia. The figure is expected at 50,000 by the end of this year. The students came mostly from China, Singapore, Indonesia and the Middle East.

The students decide to study in Malaysia because the education system is of international standard and they can choose faculties and programmes at 17 public and 26 private schools. After the graduation, they can receive diploma of famous colleges in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

 At the exhibition
English is the official language at the schools, therefore, apart from obtaining specific knowledge, overseas students have a great chance to improve their fluency of English language. Low school fees and living expenses are equally attractive. Malaysia has also additional advantages in landscapes and facilities for social activities, sports and outdoor events.

Vietnamese students in Malaysia

Currently, there are 449 Vietnamese students in Malaysia, double the number of 2002, and studying in business management, tourism, fashion design, information technology, mechanics, etc. Most of them intend to continue higher education in UK, US, Australia and Canada. According to Malaysian Ministry of Education, Vietnamese students are diligent. Many of them got scholarships or prizes by Malaysian universities.

In addition to annual scholarships granted to Vietnamese students, Malaysian Embassy together with Malaysian Business Association in Vietnam will have a programme encouraging Vietnamese students to study in Malaysia. For instances, Malaysia Airlines will reduce 25 per cent of air fares for Vietnamese students in domestic flights and Vietnam-Malaysia return tickets. The relatives of Vietnamese students will have the same benefit. Low-cost tourist tours will also be organised for Vietnamese students and their relatives to visit Malaysian universities before making their best choice.

Malaysian Ambassador A.H. Anuar said that after graduation, Vietnamese students can have the chance to work in Malaysia. They can also work for Malaysian companies in Vietnam. There are now 135 Malaysian companies operating in Vietnam, mostly in Ho Chi Minh city and neighbouring provinces.

With comparative edge, Malaysia will attract more Vietnamese students, especially when the graduates return and work in Vietnam.
