Tetra Pak – a food processing and packaging solutions provider from Sweden – has signed a cooperation agreement with Biopa Technology Company (Biopa) and Van Diem Paper Company (Van Diem) to spearhead the recycling of used beverage cartons in Northern Vietnam.

This collaboration marks a major milestone for Tetra Pak, as the company continues to expand its partnership with recyclers to develop the collection and recycling infrastructure of beverage cartons in the North. Prior to this agreement, used beverage cartons collected in the northern region had to be transported to the South for recycling by two Tetra Pak's partners in the collection network for used beverage cartons.

This new initiative will surely support the entire value chain to fulfill their sustainability ambitions.

Under the agreement, Van Diem will be responsible for recycling used beverage cartons, while Biopa will organize and manage the collection network in the North. It is expected that by end of 2023, Biopa and Van Diem will collect and recycle approximately 800 tons of UBC, with a goal of reaching 3,000 tons per year by 2025.

"Tetra Pak's cartons help bring nutritious and safe food to millions of consumers, but it also places responsibility on us and F&B manufacturers to ensure that all used cartons are collected and recycled to save resources and keep the environment clean," said Mr. Eliseo Barcas, Managing Director of Tetra Pak Vietnam.

According to Mr. Eliseo, Tetra Pak is continuously seeking new partnerships to raise awareness and establish infrastructure to collect used beverage cartons in Vietnam

Implementing collection and recycling on a large scale requires extensive participation from all stakeholders, including manufacturers, waste collectors, recyclers, consumers, and authorities. That is why Tetra Pak has been continuously seeking new partnerships to raise awareness and establish infrastructure to collect used beverage cartons in Vietnam, Mr. Eliseo added.

"We will build and maintain the collection of used beverage cartons in the northern provinces and cities through Biopa's existing network as well as continuously establish new collection stations in industrial zones, apartment buildings, and other key areas," said Mr. Phan Cong Bang, General Director of Biopa. "Through this three-party cooperation agreement, we hope to make it easier for people to access carton collection and increase the carton recycling rate in Vietnam." Mr. Bang reaffirmed.

Mr. Le Manh Anh, Deputy General Director of Van Diem, said: "The used beverage cartons can be recycled into many useful items such as notebooks and ecological roofing. Collaborating with Tetra Pak and Biopa will enable us to ensure and make the recycling cartons supply more stable and effective."

Tetra Pak is not only cooperating with collectors and recyclers but also working with retailers and partners to constantly expand the public carton collection network.

The company has joined force with AEON Mall and Mega Market to set up booths in these shopping malls in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces for consumers to drop off used beverage cartons for collection and recycling.
