The pursuit of "Toward Net Zero" encapsulates TH true MILK's strategy, delineating a comprehensive trajectory from verdant pastures to pristine glasses. This commitment mirrors TH Group's alignment with the Vietnamese government's directive of "Commitments Coupled with Actions." Through this approach, TH Group actively engages in climate change objectives and sustainable development goals.

Easing emissions through initiatives

The commitment made by the Government of Vietnam at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) and reaffirmed at COP27, aiming for Net Zero by 2050, serves as a pivotal historical milestone
. This commitment lays the groundwork for fostering a green and sustainable economy in the nation.

Mr. Aghyal Mandal, General Director of TH Milk Joint Stock Company, underscored TH Group's unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship, aligning with the government's Net Zero goal. The company pursues a meticulously structured sustainable development strategy anchored in six pillars: Nutrition - Health, Environment, Education, People, Community, and Animal Welfare.

TH Group's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions revolves around innovative initiatives and the adoption of green and advanced technologies for effective energy management in its facilities, predominantly fueled by renewable energy sources. The group sets to annually reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions at farms and factories (Scope 1) by an average of 15%. Simultaneously, the objective is to decrease the combined scope of direct and indirect greenhouse emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) per unit of product at TH factories and farms by an average of 15% each year.

TH Group targets a comprehensive reduction in emissions across the entire closed production chain

With steadfast commitment and proactive measures, TH Group achieved notable results in 2022, surpassing the set emission reduction plan by more than 20% per unit of product on its farms. Specifically, TH Milk Joint Stock Company achieved a substantial reduction in emissions, dropping from an average of 0.168 kg of CO2 per liter of milk (Scope 1 & 2) in 2019-2020 to an outstandingly low level of 0.103 kg of CO2 per unit of product in 2022 - remarkably lower than regional dairy factories in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

In a significant move toward sustainability, TH Group transitioned from fossil fuel (FO) to biomass fuel (burning wood chip byproducts sourced from the wood processing industry), resulting in a reduction of more than 85% in total greenhouse gas emissions across its entire factory system in 2022 compared to 2021 (Scope 1).

Furthermore, the shift from incandescent lights to energy-efficient LED lights in TH's farms and factories led to substantial energy savings of 5 million kWh, equivalent to approximately 4,000 tons of CO2 reduction in 2022. This initiative earned TH Group the Encouragement Award for Energy Saving and the Good Energy Manager Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Green transformation

As an example of a sustainable business aspiring for a future of net-zero emissions, TH Group embraces the principles of the green and circular economies as integral components of its sustainable business development.

Since its inception, TH Group has been at the forefront of sustainable practices, investing in cutting-edge technology for its inaugural clean fresh milk project. All endeavors of the group consistently adhere to eco-friendly materials, green energy, and renewable energy principles.

In a proactive move, while many companies are exploring renewable energy solutions to meet their business needs, TH Group initiated a rooftop solar power project in June 2020. This project not only aligns with the group's commitment to sustainability but also responds to the National Program on the economical and efficient use of energy for the 2019-2030 period. By September 2020, the project had been successfully installed and integrated into the national power grid.

TH Group extends its commitment to sustainable energy practices by collaborating on rooftop solar power systems for its cow farms in TH Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, and Da Lat. This initiative, encouraged by the government and the Northern Power Corporation, aims to alleviate the current supply shortage in the northern power grid.

Mr. Arghya Mandal, highlighting TH's current progress, noted that six farms are currently powered by solar energy, constituting a fifth of the group's power consumption and a significant portion during the summer. Operational since its inception, the solar power system has enabled TH Group to save 29,000 kWh per month, contributing to a substantial reduction in gas emissions. In 2022 alone, TH farms injected approximately 7 million kWh of electricity into the power grid, accounting for nearly 10% of their electricity consumption. This equates to a reduction or recovery of more than 4,500 tons of CO2 annually.

Recognizing the pivotal role of solar power in diversifying energy supply, reducing greenhouse gases, and ensuring national energy security, TH Group has positioned itself as a leader in the electricity industry. Furthermore, the group is committed to enhancing power efficiency and minimizing CO2 emissions through the development of a biomass power project in its NASU Nghe An sugar manufacturing plant, slated for 2023-2026. Additionally, TH Group has installed supplementary solar power systems in the Nghe An wood factory and other food production facilities.

The commitment to energy optimization extends to TH Group's production processes, where the implementation of projects such as water condensate recovery has resulted in significant reductions in electricity, oil, and water consumption indices in 2022 compared to 2021.

Looking ahead to 2026, TH Group envisions projects leveraging biogas energy generated from livestock waste for farm activities, emphasizing a forward-looking strategy centered on modern, energy-efficient equipment and eco-friendly, high-performance materials in all new equipment investments.
