More than 1,300 Tripso.com readers have picked Vietnam as one of the top five destinations to travel to in 2006, the Tripso forum of the US has announced.

Vietnam is an amazing country to be explored, the readers said, mentioning great beaches, low-cost shopping, and a lot of unique villages and towns.

In 2005, the communist country received around 3.34 million foreign tourists and 15 million domestic tourists, up 18.4 per cent and 7.6 per cent on-year respectively, earning revenues of VND30 trillion (US$1.91 billion), up 14 per cent against the last year. This is an impressive figure, the readers said with pleasure.

"The Vietnamese people are some of the most friendly on Earth (ranking right up there with Thais, Australians and Filipinos), and the fact that a luxury five-star resort costs about what a Red Roof would in the US makes it all the more compelling," said one Tripso.com reader.

Last year, the number of US tourists to the communist country ranked second with more than 333, 000 arrivals. The event will contribute to help the country fulfil the target of welcoming 20.9 million tourists this year, said an official from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT).

Other top destinations include Las Vegas and New York City in the US, Guatemala, Costa Rica and the southern Caribbean hot spots.
