On June 25, Pfizer Vietnam officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with K Hospital. Prior to this, Pfizer had established similar agreements with the Vietnam Cancer Association (April 24) and Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital (May 20), strengthening collaboration with leading cancer institutions. The three-year partnership focuses on enhancing healthcare workforce capacity through practical trainings and fostering expert networking both locally and internationally.

The partnership covers: sponsoring and co-hosting scientific meetings to improve the capability and experience of healthcare providers in diagnosing, treating and caring for cancer patients; supporting participation in domestic and foreign conferences in the field of oncology and clinical pharmacy; and providing education grants to raise community awareness of common cancers.

Prof. Dr. Le Van Quang, Director of K Hospital, speaks at the ceremony

As a leading oncology hospital, K Hospital not only manages complex cancer cases but also provides oncology care expertise and direction to improve treatment quality. Prof. Dr. Le Van Quang, Director of K Hospital, remarked: "Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in Vietnam. Late detection, complex treatment pathways, and high treatment costs continue to strain the healthcare system. Strategic partnerships with organizations like Pfizer Vietnam are essential to expand advanced disease management training, learn/ exchange on best practices, and work toward more sustainable and patient-centered treatment outcomes"

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Dieu, President of the Vietnam Cancer Association, highlights the importance of healthcare professionals training in oncology

Pfizer Vietnam's effort to promote multi-stakeholder collaboration is further strengthened by the signing with the Vietnam Cancer Association – an organization whichconnects oncology experts and institutions to advance cancer prevention efforts. Prof. Dr. Bui Dieu, President of the Vietnam Cancer Association, shared: "As oncology evolves rapidly, continuous education and knowledge updates are essential. We value our collaboration with Pfizer Vietnam as it offers a great opportunity to share knowledge, access the latest research, and enhance professional capacity to provide more modern and comprehensive care for cancer patients.”

According to the WHO’s “Comprehensive Cancer Prevention and Control Strategy for South-East Asia 2024–2030”, the region is facing a rapidly growing cancer burden, with 2.37 million new cases and 1.53 million deaths recorded in 2022. These figures are projected to rise by 85.7% by 2050, driven by population aging, environmental pollution, and increasingly unhealthy lifestyles.

In Vietnam, from 2022 to 2050, new cancer cases are predicted to rise by 71.7% (309,972 cases), while mortality may increase by 86.5% (224,165 cases). Additionally, Vietnamese citizens spend an estimated USD 2 billion annually on overseas treatment, with cancer being one of the leading causes due to its highly complex and specialized treatment requirements.

This underscores the urgent need to enhance domestic oncology diagnosis, treatment and management capabilities, with a focus on building a skilled medical workforce and developing a comprehensive care system. These are crucial foundations to improve healthcare quality, better meet patient needs, and gradually narrow the gap with more advanced healthcare systems.
