General Secretary To Lam unanimously elected as State President of Vietnam

Legislators unanimously elected General Secretary To Lam as new State President of Vietnam on Tuesday at the ongoing session of the 16th National Assembly.

To Lam, aged 69, will serve a five-year term, from 2026 to 2031.

With the dual role, General Secretary and State President To Lam will hold two key positions: Secretary of the Central Military Commission and Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council.

To Lam was born in the northern province of Hung Yen. He joined the Communist Party of Viet Nam on August 22, 1981.

He served as member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam in the 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th tenures; member of Political Bureau in the 12th, 13th, and 14th tenures; deputy to the National Assembly in the 14th, 15th, and 16th tenures.

To Lam was appointed as Deputy Minister of Public Security in 2010 and served as Minister of Public Security between 2016 and 2024.

He was elected as State President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam on May 22, 2024.

On August 3, 2024, he was elected as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Central Committee.

On January 23, 2026, he was re-elected as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Central Committee.
