As Vietnam and Thailand celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, businesses are playing an increasingly important role in translating bilateral cooperation into lasting values. Drawing on the strengths of one of Thailand’s foremost business groups, SABECO exemplifies how a Vietnamese-rooted company can support national development while bringing Vietnamese brewing quality to global markets.

SABECO's production operations are guided by commitments to operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Vietnam and Thailand are entering a new phase of ties, with leaders reaffirming closer cooperation across trade, investment and sustainable development at a 9 June meeting in Hanoi.

While governments set the strategic vision, businesses help turn it into concrete outcomes. Among them is Saigon Beer-Alcohol-Beverage Corporation (SABECO), a company whose story is closely intertwined with Vietnam’s development and growing international integration.

A legacy rooted in Vietnam

Born and brewed in Vietnam over the past century and a half, SABECO has evolved from a local brewery into one of the country's leading beverage companies. Its products have remained closely associated with everyday Vietnamese life – from cultural gatherings, festive occasions, and moments shared among friends and colleagues.

As Vietnam transformed into one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic economies, SABECO expanded its footprint while remaining deeply connected to local communities. Today, the company operates 26 breweries across 34 provinces, with more than 200,000 points of sale nationwide. This extensive network supports economic activity across the value chain, connecting suppliers, distributors, retailers and consumers throughout the country.

Mr. Lester Tan, General Director of SABECO, shared: “SABECO’s living legacy does not end at 150 years. We will continue to innovate responsibly, support sustainable development, and invest in initiatives that reflect our mission of brewing with purpose. Vietnam is moving forward with confidence and ambition. And SABECO is committed to moving forward together with the nation.”

Creating values beyond business

Today, companies are increasingly expected to create value that extends beyond products and financial performance. Sustainability, community development and responsible operations have become essential drivers of long-term growth.

For SABECO, sustainability is embedded across its operations. Renewable energy now accounts for 46.4% of the company’s energy consumption, while all packaging is designed to be recyclable. These efforts support both operational efficiency and environmental goals. The company’s contribution also extends through its supply chain. With 94% of procurement spending directed to local suppliers, SABECO helps strengthen domestic manufacturing while supporting thousands of businesses nationwide. Its operations sustain between 8,000 and 13,000 direct jobs and an estimated 40,000 to 60,000 indirect jobs across multiple sectors.

These efforts have earned SABECO recognition among Vietnam’s Top 10 Sustainable Companies in the manufacturing sector under the 2025 Corporate Sustainability Index program and as an outstanding green energy and environmental enterprise at the World Energy and Environment Forum – Vietnam 2026.

Beyond its business operations, SABECO continues to invest in the communities where it operates. Long-running initiatives such as “Light Up the Rural” and “Light Up the Borderlines” programs, annual Tet community initiatives and disaster relief efforts have contributed to improving livelihoods and strengthening community resilience across Vietnam.

Bringing Vietnamese pride to the world

While deeply rooted in Vietnam, SABECO has steadily expanded its international presence. Today, SABECO’s beer products are enjoyed in more than 40 countries and territories, introducing global consumers to Vietnamese brewing quality, craftsmanship and legacy.

The company’s growing reputation has also been recognized in major international competitions. At the 2026 Melbourne Royal Australian International Beer Awards, Saigon Lager and 333 Beer won Silver medals, while Lac Viet, Saigon Special, Saigon Export Premium and Saigon Chill earned Bronze medals. A few months later, SABECO also impressed at the World Beer Championships – Spring Seasonals 2026 in the United States, where Saigon Lager, 333 Beer and 333 Pilsner received Silver medals.

These achievements demonstrate that brands rooted in local heritage can compete successfully on the global stage while remaining authentic to their origins. Each exported product carries not only Vietnamese craftsmanship but also the story of a local enterprise that has grown alongside the nation for more than a century.

As Vietnam and Thailand deepen cooperation across trade, investment and sustainable development, businesses will continue to play a vital role in translating partnerships into shared prosperity. Through its commitment to sustainable growth, community development and international expansion, SABECO is helping write the next chapter of Vietnam's growth story while contributing to the enduring partnership between Vietnam and Thailand.
