VAMA June Car Sales Rise 5 per cent vs May

2:39:58 PM | 7/7/2006

The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) has announced that its 14 company members’ car sales in June increased 8.05 per cent on month and 5 per cent on year to 3,783 units.

This is the second month in a row VAMA enjoyed overall car sales increases after customers abandoned hopes of purchasing lower-priced imported vehicles.

According to the VAMA release, sale volume of passenger cars, multipurpose vehicles (MPV) and minibuses gained improvement to a certain extent.

VAMA member companies sold up to 1,260 MPVs, 706 passenger cars and 387 minibuses, up 10 per cent, 24 per cent and 51 per cent over May, respectively.

However, the aggregate sales volume from January to June declined 14 per cent year on year to 15,941 units, said the report. “Notably, sales of passenger cars were down 56 per cent on year.”

According to a VAMA member, the sharp rise in car sales was mainly attributed to the penetration failure of imported used cars into Vietnam due to high taxes and tightened customs procedures, shattering hopes of car buyers to buy low-priced cars.

The huge discounts and attractive promotional sales programs were also key factors to the rise, it added.

Japanese-led Toyota Vietnam remains the largest carmaker with sales of 5,755 units in January-June, holding 36.1 per cent of the market shares, followed by Vietnamese-invested Truong Hai Auto with 2,360 units, or 14.8 per cent of the market shares, Ford Vietnam with 1,715 units, or 10.8 per cent and Isuzu 1,024 units.

Mekong Auto enjoyed the highest sales growth in five months at 16 per cent while Vidamco, a GM-Daewoo branch, suffered the deepest fall of 66 per cent.
