Vietnam Earns US$228M from Seafood Exports to U.S. in Jan-May

Posted: Monday, June 22, 2009

Vietnamese firms earned US$228 million from exporting 40,000 tons of seafood products to the U.S. market in the first five months of this year, said David Lennarz, the vice president of FDA Registrar Corporation, at a recent conference in HCM City.
The conference aimed to disseminate regulations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to local companies who expect to export to the U.S.
Lennarz noted at the conference that Vietnamese firms, especially food and pharmaceutical producers, are inexperienced in dealing with the complicated regulations of the FDA
“A high rate of U.S.-bound goods from Vietnam were rejected and sent back due to wrong label,” the vice president said.
Lennarz also suggested that Vietnamese seafood processors strictly apply the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) for its production facilities to avoid the error.
Vietnam was estimated to have earned US$1.3 billion from seafood exports in the first five months this year, down 10 per cent on-year.
The seafood sector plans to earn US$4 billion from exports in 2009, compared to US$4.5 billion made last year.
Vietnam is now among the top ten seafood exporters in the world, with products being exported to 150 countries and territories worldwide. (Saigon Times Weekly)
