Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a decision to call for foreign investment into 163 key national projects ranging from industrial, infrastructure, forestry, fisheries, hospitality and services between 2006 and 2010, the Ministry of Planning and Investment said on its web site.
They include 109 infrastructure, minerals exploitation, metallurgy, mechanics, power, oil refinery, chemical industries, building materials, high-tech sectors, six agro forestry fisheries projects and 48 others in tourism and service sectors.
MPI did not specify the exact money amounts for these projects, however.
Prime Minister will set up inter-ministerial taskforces to address timely problems regarding the new projects, MPI said.
Vietnam have attracted US$9.6 billion of foreign direct investment from the beginning of this year, up 38 per cent on-year, the Ministry of Planning and Investment said.
Of the sum, US$8.29 billion came from 814 newly-licensed FDI projects and the remainder from capital expansion of 274 existing projects, said MPI.
The average capital for each project reached US$8 million, compared to US$7.01 million of last year.
The industrial production sector remained the top position in attracting FDI projects between January and September with US$4.17 billion, accounting for 50.4 per cent of the total, followed by the services with US$3.7 billion or 47.6 per cent.
South Korea took the lead among the 47 countries and territories investing in the country with US$2.1 billion, followed by Singapore with US$1.3 billion, British Virgin Islands and Taiwan with US$1.2 billion and US$629.7 million respectively. Japan surpassed India to post the fifth position with US$623.1 million.
Ho Chi Minh City, which has seen an on-year FDI drop for four consecutive months, topped the nation with US$1.1 billion, while the oil-rich Ba Ria-Vung Tau province ranked second with US$1.06 billion. The runners-up were Hanoi US$864 million and Binh Duong US$634 million.
In the period, foreign companies disbursed US$3.3 billion in Vietnam. (MPI’s Website, VietnamNet)
