MobiFone, one of the four largest mobile phone networks in Vietnam, has set targets of gaining revenues of VND16 trillion (US$1 billion) and having ten million new subscribers this year, an official of the company said.

The company is planning to upgrade its networks in all provinces and cities nationwide and build more than 6,000 new base transceiver stations (BTS), bringing its total number of BTS to nearly 10,000 by late 2008.

MobiFone will also accelerate the application of new technologies and services such as NGN Core and EDGE UMITS IMT2000.

MobiFone currently has over ten million subscribers, representing around 30 per cent of the market. The company aims to become the country’s top market shares owner with 38.7 per cent this year.

Last year, MobiFone achieved revenues of VND14.5 trillion (US$900 million).

Its main rivals are the military-run Viettel, currently the market leader, and state-run Vinaphone, which is also controlled by VNPT. (Vietnam & World Economy)
