In Vietnam, rolled steel plate is now a new commodity on the market because consumers are mainly producers of household appliances and interiors. With far-sight vision, SMC realised the development potential of rolled steel sheet and quickly made investments to outstrip major rivals and become the main steel sheet supplier for industrial and electronic companies.

Construction steel (Southern Steel, Vinakyoei, Pomina, Tay Do) distributed by SMC have come to national key projects such as Phu My power plant, Ham Thuan - Da Mi hydropower plant, Nam Con Son gas project, My Thuan bridge, Tan Son Nhat airport terminal, Phu My Hung urban zone and most recently Posco Steel Group. All these increased the reputation and asserted the SMC trademark value for clients.

From the long-term development goal and strategy, apart from the steel manufacturing factory project in Phu My I Industrial Park in Than Thanh District, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province which became operational in January 2007, the company is now building a new SMC mechanical - steel plant project covering 5.3 hectares in Phu My I Industrial Zone at a cost of VND226 billion. This project will help the company satisfy more purchase orders and reduce unnecessary cost for clients.

From now until 2010, SMC targets to become a powerful company to compete with domestic and international rivals to meet steel demand in the country. The steel industry plays a vital role in the national economy and is the “food” for other economic sectors and the foundation to realise national industrialisation and modernisation. The government has approved the strategy to develop the steel industry at annual growth of 10 per cent until 2015. Entering the WTO and implementing AFTA means the removal of tariff barriers. SMC will improve its quality from production to distribution, to expand the market and edge up competitiveness on the global market.

Annual growth of over 10 per cent is an impressive figure for a newly privatised company. With transparent financial reports and sustained growth, SMC showed its excellent adaptability to the integration era and activeness in production and business. With its efforts, the company has drawn the interest of investors. Its stocks are being traded at high prices on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange.

One of the milestones of SMC is the obtainment of ISO 9001:2000 quality management system certificate granted by UK-based UKAS in early 2006. This event helped SMC quickly develop its market share and growth rate in 2007. With great effort and strong determination, SMC hopes to sell 500,000 tonnes out of 10 million tonnes sold in the market by 2010. SMC targets to become a spearhead of the Vietnamese steel industry.
