Malaysia, Biggest Timber Exporter to Vietnam in First Half of 2008
Malaysia has kept its first position in exporting timber to Vietnam in the first half of 2008, with total export revenues reaching US$90 million, up 36 per cent on year, the Vietnam Trade Information Center said.
The figure showed that Malaysia accounted for 15.15 per cent of Vietnam’s total timber import turnover.
The center said that neighboring Laos was the second exporter, selling US$59.4 million worth of timber to Vietnam in Jan-Jun period, up 17 per cent on year.
Followings were the U.S. and China with total export revenues of US$56 million and US$52 million, respectively, up 15 per cent against the first half of 2007.
In the first six months of 2008, Vietnam spent US$594 million on timber imports, up 24 per cent on year.
Its suppliers included Myanmar, Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Uruguay, Ghana, Cambodia, Thailand, New Zealand, Taiwan, Australia and Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the country exported US$1.364 billion worth of woodwork products in Jan-Jun 2008, up 20.4 per cent on year. (Vinanet, GSO)
