Mekong Delta and Thailand Cooperate in Agriculture
The Can Tho People’s Committee has recently taken part in a working session with Thailand’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture. The Thai delegation visited Can Tho to learn about agricultural development and solutions to cope with the increase in fertiliser prices in Mekong delta provinces.
At the session, Thailand’s delegation said the increase by 150 percent in fertiliser prices in Thailand posed a big problem to farmers, forcing the government to figure out some policies, such as: encouraging farmers to use organic fertiliser, reducing to use pesticides in order to reduce production costs. Due to many similarities between agriculture in Vietnam and Thailand, the two countries may intensify cooperation in this field to ensure benefits for farmers.
At the working session, the Can Tho People’s Committee expressed their ideas about the potential for cooperation between Can Tho and Thailand. In addition to the traditional agriculture, Can Tho welcomes Thailand’s enterprises to invest in its industries such as hi-tech and biological technologies.
It is important to raise productivity as well as agricultural value for farmers. Besides, the Mekong delta and Thailand may strengthen cooperation in many fields, namely: information exchange (exploitation, processing, and markets) providing farmers with new technologies, setting up small sized credit systems and organising associations to help farmers exchange their products.
