The Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) is seeking permission from relevant authorities to build two thermal power plants with a combined capacity of 105 MW in central Quang Ngai and southern Kien Giang provinces.

If the plan gets approval, one plant with a capacity of 5 MW will be built in Ly Son Island of Quang Ngai province and be fed with domestic coal sources.

Meanwhile, the other plant with a capacity of 100 MW will be located in Phu Quoc Island of Kien Giang province. Vinacomin will negotiate with its partners to buy about 350,000 tons of coal per year from Malaysia to feed the plant.

The hoped power plants are expected for operation in 2011, Vinacomin said.

The power projects are of great significance to the beneficiary localities as the 56,500-hectare Phu Quoc Island with a population of 79,800 in 2003 currently relying on power supply by four diesel-fuelled turbines with a combined capacity of only 12 MW by state-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN).

Also, the 9.97-square-kilometer Ly Son Island with a population of 19,695 people is now using power from a 2.5-MW diesel-fueled dynamo, and the locality’s power output may be doubled later this year thanks to a German-funded wind-to-power project. (Vietnam & World Economy, Saigon Liberation)
