VSA: Vietnam to Import 5 Mln Tons of Steel in 2009
Vietnam will have to import some 5 million tons of steel this year to meet the domestic demand, according to Vietnam Steel Association (VSA).
The association said the country will need more than 10.5 million tons of steel in 2009, but domestic steelmakers can produce only 5.5 million tons so the remainder of 5 million tons will be imported.
Last year, Vietnam was estimated to import more than 7.6 million tons of steel and iron, valued at US$6.34 billion, including 2.19 million tons of steel ingots worth US$1.56 billion. (Kinh Te & Do Thi, GSO 2008)
