Ministry: Vietnam Aquatic Product Output up 16 per cent in Jan-Feb
Localities in Vietnam were estimated to catch 685,999 tons of aquatic products in the first two months of 2009, reaching 19.8 per cent of yearly plan and up 16 per cent on year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said.
Favorable weather condition and decreased oil prices encouraged local fishermen to boost fishing, the ministry said.
Of the total, aquaculture farms contributed 273,600 tons, up 1.1 per cent; and fishing boats, 396,100 tons, up 2.5 per cent against the same period of last year.
In February, localities nationwide caught 340,000 tons of aquatic products, up 2.5 per cent on year, and 261,300 tons of fish and 24,400 tons of shrimps, up 1.9 per cent and 3 per cent on year, respectively.
The ministry said local fishermen are expanding aquaculture area as prices of fish and shrimp have rebounded. (Agroviet.gov.vn, GSO Feb Edition)
