Russia has agreed to import 100,000 tons of seafood products valued at US$200 million from Vietnam in 2009, the Youth newspaper reported, citing Duong Ngoc Minh, head of the Vietnam Catfish Steering Board.

Russia will resume buying seafood from April 2009, after nearly four months of halting because they did not meet food safety and hygiene standards.

Minh said that of the total 100,000 tons, some 70,000 tons will be tra catfish, while the remaining will be shrimp, dried seafood and fried fish.

Russia has okayed 30 Vietnamese companies to export, including ten catfish companies.

Russia imported nearly US$216.4 million worth of seafood from Vietnam last year, according to the Vietnam Trade Information Center. (Youth)
