Vietnam Pepper Export Rockets 65 per cent in Q1
Vietnam was estimated to have exported 25,000 tons of pepper in the first quarter of 2009, up 65 per cent on year, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).
But the exports were valued at US$63 million, a slight rise of 15.5 per cent against the same period of last year.
The Vietnam Pepper Association said pepper export price sharply decreased to US$2,282/ton in the Jan-Mar, from US$3,323/ton in Jan-Mar of 2008.
At domestic market, pepper price also dropped to only VND28,000-VND29,000/kilogram, reducing local farmers’ profit by 40 per cent on year.
The association said localities in Vietnam have completed 2009 pepper crop with estimated output of 95,000 tons, up 4,000 tons against previous year. (Youth, Vietnam & World Economy)
