Catfish Price Rebounding in Mekong Delta
Price of tra catfish has increased over the past month in Mekong Delta provinces, pleasing local farmers.
A kilogram of first-grade tra catfish is now offered at VND16,500-VND17,000 while price of second-grade catfish is VND16,000-VND16,200/kilo.
This is the highest level since late 2008, that profit local farmers around VND1,000-VND2,000/kilo.
Decreased output at high demand is the major reason for the price hike, according to seafood associations in the region.
Mekong Delta’s catfish output is estimated to decrease by nearly 50 per cent in 2009.
Tra and basa catfish surpassed shrimp to be the most forex earners with US$208.4 million in the first quarter of 2009, accounting for 36 per cent of total seafood export revenue, but down 5 per cent against the same period of 2008. (Saigon Liberation)
