Japan Takes Lead in Seafood Import from Vietnam in First Quarter

Japan took lead among 34 main importers of Vietnamese seafood in the first quarter of 2009, with total revenue of US$137.73 million, or 18.41 per cent of the country’s total seafood export revenue, figures provided by the Vietnam General Customs Department showed.

The department said Vietnam exported US$748.17 million worth of seafood in Jan-Mar period, down 6.19 per cent on year.

The EU bloc ranked second as it spent US$120 million importing 50,000 tons of seafood products from Vietnam. EU was the biggest consumer of Vietnamese tuna with value of US$10.75 million.

Following was the U.S. with revenue of US$111.45 million, accounting for 18.41 per cent.
