South Korea is now considered an important potential overseas market for Vietnamese seafood products, the Vietnam News Agency reported, citing an official of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP)

Demand for seafood in South Korea has increased sharply over recent years while its aquatic output has constantly dropped, said the Deputy Permanent Chairman of the VASEP Nguyen Huu Dung.

South Korean consumers are keen on shrimp, shellfish, pangasius fish and crabs, Dung added.

VASEP plans to work with the South Korean Fisheries Trade Association (KFTA) to exchange information, expand the market and study demand in that country. They also both agreed to inform each other about any uncertified products.

The National Agro-forestry and Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (NAFIQAD) has asked all seafood exporters and processors to update regularly and follow regulations set by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as South Korean agencies.

South Korean is estimated to import 7,300 tons of shrimp from Vietnam every year. (Vietnam & World Economy)
