The U.S. remained the biggest importer of Vietnamese cashew nut as it spent US$85 million importing the product from the Southeast Asian country in the first six months this year, according to the Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas).

The figure is estimated to account for 28 per cent of total earnings of Vietnamese firms from shipping cashew nuts abroad in the period, the association noted.

In June, domestic companies reportedly sold 5,000 tons of cashew nut to the U.S., gaining US$21.5 million, up 60 per cent and 72 per cent against those of the previous month.

China, meanwhile, ranked second despite the fact that Vietnamese cashew nut volume exported to the neighboring country had trended to slightly decrease in January-June period.

Statistics of Vinacas showed that Vietnam exported 15,700 tons of cashew nut to this market, gaining export turnover of US$67 million.

Earlier, Vinacas predicted that Vietnam will export only US$600 million worth of cashew nuts in 2009, down 35 per cent on-year.

Last year, Vietnam exported 167,000 tons of cashews, earning US$920 million, becoming the world’s largest cashew exporter. (CafeF)
