Located in Than Uyen district of Lai Chau province - an area with the best climate and soil conditions for growing tea, Than Uyen Tea Joint Stock Company has grown into a top-tier tea producer in Vietnam, especially with its premium Shan Tuyet tea.
An altitude of 600 m, a wide change of weather in a day (up to 10 Celsius decree between day and night) and a suitable soil gather best conditions for growing Shan Tuyet tea in the mountainous district of Than Uyen. Sunlight, heat, mist and humidity pile up nutrients for tea plants to grow and resist diseases.
Purebred Shan Tuyet tea features fragrance and sweetness, high concentrations of solute, tannins and attar, which are safe for users. According to the Vietnam Tea Association (Vitas), Shan Tuyet tea can be processed into green tea and black tea with quality measured 10 - 14 % higher than other tea varieties. This tea is very interesting to foreign consumers thanks to its premium quality.
Than Uyen Tea Joint Stock Company is now cultivating tea plants on 451 ha of centralised farms and nearly 800 ha of project farms. The company’s facilities are processing 80 tonnes of green tea a day and 20 tonnes of black teas for export. The company has applied the ISO 22000:2005 management system to its production processes to ensure food safety. This is the orientation and firm foundation for building the trademark for Than Uyen tea.
Forecasting the market demand and promoting the outstanding product features, in 2008, the company invested in a RFL - 100 kiln and two balling machines to process new premium tea. After a number of experiments, the product met quality and style requirements. The project to build a tea ball production factory with annual capacity of 500 tonnes was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The company expects to start operating the factory by the end of 2010.
In 2009, the company’s leadership has made market forecasts to choose the time to introduce the new product to strengthen its competition on the domestic and international markets. With its traditional techniques and modern facilities, the company has capably processed many types of teas such as stretched green tea, dehydrated tea, black tea and balled tea. The green tea featuring snow marks, cleanness and safety for users has overwhelmingly occupied the markets. The company takes quality as the measure of staff incomes and orients its operations towards sustainable development.
In 2010, although the economy has revived, the tea industry is still facing up with numerous difficulties ahead. The company’s management has ordered stable production, strict control over material production, careful processing, continued technology transfer and formation of stable material sources. Especially, the company pays attention to enlarging export markets and making its tea a symbol product for community health.
At present, the company is implementing a cooperation agreement with JICA of Japan to build a safe material zone and is coordinating with SNV Organisation to build and apply the quality management system in accordance with GLOBAL GAP standard. With the strict process of ensure product safe to consumers, Than Uyen Tea Joint Stock Company is enriching the Than Uyen land and residents in the northwest of Vietnam.
