Under the theme “United Nations’ Harmonised Action Initiative: Experience and Future”, the high-ranking conference on One United Nations Initiative is set to take place in Hanoi from June 14 - 16, 2010. The conference is expected to attract 260 delegates from eight pilot countries, 10 volunteer countries and 18 donor countries. It will be also attended by senior UN representatives, international organisations and diplomatic missions in Vietnam.

This information has been released at a recent press conference hosted in Hanoi by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

The "One UN Initiative" is one of the UN reform policies aimed at improving operating efficiency of this organisation, in line with the spirit of Paris Declaration and Hanoi Core Statement on aid efficiency.

Vietnam is one of the nations conducting the One UN Initiative programme since 2006. After four years, Vietnam’s reform has attained achievements. United Nations Resident Co-ordinator in Vietnam John Hendra said: “The conference has a very important significance, especially for Vietnam. Vietnamese leaders will have the opportunity to discuss with many different countries the progresses and challenges that Vietnam is facing. In 2010, Vietnam has finished the final stage of Hanoi Commitment on aid effectiveness which serves development objectives of Vietnam, from which activities of the UN will be promoted more effectively.”

The UN Harmonised Programme is one of the recommendations on the consistency of the whole system and other development activities of United Nations to its member nations.

The conference will have three main sessions at senior official and ministerial levels. This is an opportunity for selected countries to implement “UN Delivering as One” approach, share experience and look to five “one”, including one plan, one budgetary framework, one leader, one regime and one office.

The conference is to share findings and conclusions drawing from evaluations made by eight pilot countries and make up an agenda for the next activities to boost the initiative.

The conference will release the Hanoi Declaration, calling on concerned parties to continue to act to ensure the effectiveness of UN activities at the national level and operate as a unified system.
