Mekong Delta region plans to invest VND5.880 trillion (US$308.111 million) sourced from the state budget and official development assistance (ODA) in irrigation projects in the 2006-2010 period.

Each province in the region invested VND90.5 billion on average in the irrigation field, the Lao Dong newspaper cited Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s report.

The move came from the Mekong Delta irrigation plan for 2006-2010 and vision to 2020 projected in Prime Minister’s Decision No 85/2006/QD-TTg dated April 2006.

The ministry has disbursed VDN943.3 billion from the state budget and ODA for irrigation projects between Jan and May this year, fulfilling 56.16% of whole-year plan.

Vietnam will need up to VND350 trillion (US$18.4 billion) for irrigation development from now to 2020, the ministry said in a draft already submitted to the prime minister for consideration. (Lao Dong Jun 30)
