The Vietnamese Ministry of Transport has started upgrading a 24.7-kilometer road, linking Haiphong city and Hai Duong province in northern region which is estimated to cost VND1.25 trillion ($65.78 million).

The ministry expects to finish the upgrading in 2012.

The road is a part of National Highway No. 37 which runs through Thai Binh, Hai Duong, Bac Giang, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai and Son La provinces.

Vietnam has 256,683 km, including 17,228 km of national highways and 8,492 km of urban roads. However, two thirds of the roads need upgrading now.

At a recent Consultative Group (CG) meeting, donors said that weak infrastructure is one of Vietnam’s biggest barriers hindering foreign investment inflow. (VNA)
