Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has requested the Ministry of Transport to finalize a $1 billion project to build Dau Giay-Da Lat expressway in the Central Highlands region.

Hai made the request at a meeting with authorities of Lam Dong province on June 22.

Dau Giay-Da Lat expressway is considered as a key infrastructure project for Vietnam in general and Lam Dong in particular, Hai emphasized.

At the meeting, he highlighted the province’s recent quick economic growth but also pointed out its poor infrastructure as a main barrier to attract foreign and domestic investors.

Vietnam will prioritize funding for National Highway No.20 linking HCM City with Da Lat and National Highway No. 27 connecting Lam Dong and Dak Lak next year, Hai added.

The Southeast Asian country has 256,683 km, including 17,228 km of national highways and 8,492 km of urban roads. However, two thirds of the roads need upgrading now.

At a recent Consultative Group (CG) meeting, donors said that poor infrastructure is one of Vietnam’s biggest barriers hindering foreign investors and they urged the country to focus on dealing with the problem. (VoV)
