The southernmost province of Ca Mau is seeking VND400 billion ($21.05 million) to build 1,588 bridges in its rural areas by 2010.

Ca Mau has opened 600 among these bridges to traffic so far, said Nguyen Tien Hai, vice chairman of the province..

The bridge construction is aimed to reduce the locality’s drop-out rate as poor transport infrastructure is a big barrier for local students to go to school, Hai said, adding that Cau Mau is also seeking VND14 billion to support its students’ travel to school in remote areas.

Surrounded by the sea on three sides and crisscrossed by canals, Ca Mau province needs many bridges and more than 39,000 students in the province go to school by ferry, Hai attributed, revealing it built 1,012 bridges last year.

Ca Mau plans to spend VND1.6 trillion ($86.58 million) on infrastructure projects this year. It is calling for investments from the state budget, official development assistance (ODA) and foreign and domestic investors to carry out these projects. (Investment)
