Vietnam Licenses 9th Mobile Phone Network
The Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC) granted an operation license to Vietnam Multimedia Corporation (VTC) June 22 to become the ninth mobile phone service provider in Vietnam.
VTC is permitted to set up network and supply 3G mobile services sharing wireless frequency bands with EVN Telecom, provide domestic roaming services applied to GSM network for subscribers in Vietnam and have its own prefix digit.
As a result, it will be the second mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in the local market, behind Indochina Telecom which was licensed in August 2009 to share a 3G network with Viettel.
By the end of this year, VTC will officially launch its service nationwide because it signed a deal to use network infrastructure of EVN Telecom in March, the Communist Party of Vietnam said on its website Wednesday.
VTC is now the largest provider of digital content, television and online game services in the country.
Vietnam’s eight other mobile network operators are MobiFone, VinaPhone, Viettel, S-Fone, Vietnamobile, EVN Telecom, Gtel Mobile and Indochina Telecom, serving 128.9 million subscribers by the end of May, with 40% using Viettel services.
FPT Telecom, which is better known for its internet services, has also been seeking an approval for its own mobile virtual network. (
