Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has recently approved a plan to build eight nuclear power plants through 2030, the government said on its website on June 22.

The plants are expected to be built in the central provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Ninh Thuan, each of which will have between four and six reactors.

The Southeast Asian country targets to put into operation 13 nuclear reactors through 2030, including the first in 2020, the government said, giving no detail on investment.

The nation expects nuclear power generation capacity will be raised to 8,000 MW through 2025 and to 15,000 MW through 2030, accounting 10% of the national power capacity.

Vietnam plans to build the first two nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 4,000 MW in the central province of Ninh Thuan in 2014 with expected operation in 2020.

The country chose Russian Rosatom to use Russia’s Light Water Reactor (LWR) technology to build the first two reactors as Russia is experienced in building nuclear power plants in full compliance with international requirements on nuclear security and safety. (www.chinhphu.vn)
