Ho Chi Minh City’s consumer price index (CPI) in Aug is estimated to have dropped 0.25% from June, marking it as the second consecutive falls so far this year, according to the municipal Statistics Office.

The index was up 8.21% from a year earlier and 4.52% from the beginning of 2010, said Du Quang Nam, head of the office.

The CPI decrease in Aug was driven by lower costs of foods and foodstuffs, post telecommunication services and some other commodities.

The price of post and telecoms services saw the sharpest fall of 4.71%, while the prices of food, restaurant services, and foodstuffs dropped by 0.77%, 0.13% and 0.06%, respectively.

Household appliances, meanwhile, posted the highest CPI rise of 0.65%, followed by the group of housing-electricity-water-fuel, at 0.42%, and transport services, at 0.38%.

The prices of cultural-entertainment-tourism services were up 0.26%, and those of garments-headwear-footwear climbed by 0.12% and healthcare service, 0.11%.

Gold surged 1.3% on-month in Aug, backed by escalating prices on the global market, while the U.S. dollar edged up 0.77%. (VNA)
